Cooking up an ocean

Grace, Liah and I headed to Sharinah’s place on Friday. Before that, we stopped at Sun Plaza’s NTUC to get some stuff for dinner as Liah and Grace were in the mood to cook. When we reached Sharinah’s place, they cooked up a storm. Grace said that I couldn’t cook.

Eh, hello...
I can...but do I want to?
Haha.
My defence?
The kitchen was crowded with too many cooks already!

Anyway the chicken and mushroom spaghetti bolognaise was great. We were too stuffed by then and had no more space for choc fondue. So we are going to meet up one of these days for fondue definitely. Rotted in front of the telly watching Joanne Peh till 2200hrs. The three of us went off. We sent Liah off to work, picked Lauren up and then Grace, Lauren and I headed to Bugis where Rae was already waiting for us. She had gotten us free tickets to watch Ocean’s 13.

OCEAN’S 13 is really a sight for sore eyes. All those men!
And oh, Bradley…you’re the e-Pitt-ome of a gorgeous, handsome, charming good-looking man.

Damn you, Jolie.

Ah… *faint*

Rusty Ryan: Are you alright?
Danny Ocean: Yeh, um, I just bit into a red pepper.
Rusty Ryan: Is that... are you... are you watching Oprah?

Ocean’s 13 was a pleasant show. Pleasant because it is not bad and everything is smooth-sailing. Too smooth-sailing in fact and I think…that is the flaw. There is not much crisis and everything seems hunky-dory.

Still, I think O13 is slightly better than O12 even though the latter has Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones as eye candies. O13 is digestible, more “cool” and the pace is good. The camera works are great and the montages are just retro-licious.

Of course…all these are just secondary.
I am just happy there’s Pitt, Clooney, Damon and Affleck. *slurp*

After the show, we hung out at a coffeeshop in Hougang for a while before sending Rae home. Was so knackered by then. So so knackered.

So you think you can offend?

It’s funny how erratic the winds of change can be. One moment you are loving yourself, feeling good cause you are among some nice friends and generally, nice people…the next thing there is this asshole who just brings you down to Ground Zero. This person (hmm..let’s just call him Alfian. Oh wait, that is his name) was talking about some great massage he had before (I wasn’t listening).

He mentioned to CY2 (cause only she bothered to listen) something about having one of the best massages in his life and said something about the masseuse being a very big woman. Then for no reason, he turned to me and said “No offence, Ed”.

No offence?

Just because you used “fat/big” to describe your masseuse, you thought I would be offended? I was like … what the fuck, dude? Why did you have to put me in your story? Cant you see I was having a nicer time chatting with Adrian and Weiqiang? If you wanted my attention, err...that wasnt really the right way, yes?

I gave him that puzzled – why-the-fuck-am-I-in-your-conversation kind of look. Obviously it didn’t hit him cause he continued on and on saying that the masseuse was big but Ed was bigger and went on and on with his story.

I was beginning to get ticked off. Not because I was offended that his masseuse was thinner than I was but like what the fuck? I am fat and I know it but I don’t feel sorry for myself you know. So why should I be offended at the mere mention? Why cant this asshole tell his uninteresting nobody-gives-a-shit story and be done with it? Why in the first place should I take offence just because his masseur was one fat woman? It’s not like I had wanted to give him a massage and he rejected me because I was fatter than the masseuse. Ew...and touch his body? Hayle naw!

Seriously…I could only shake my head and came up with acidic retorts…which saw me insulting his looks, his bony ass, his stupidity and his dorkiness. But of course, I presented it better. With a smile and a wink of course. And ah, and still had the rest eating at the palm of my hand.

23 years old.
Sheesh.
I didn’t know guys at 23 can be such assholes.
Oops-y, not offence Alfian!

No I didn’t mean it.
What I meant was…Go fuck yourself, Alfian…cause nobody will.

And ah…when you eventually get fucked
I hope it is by some diseased lard-ass of a woman.
Hey, maybe she can give you the best massage of your life

…and herpes.

Ew.

But ahahaha...totally deserving.

P/S: Fat..short...ugly..but ah, my friend, when I was your age, I didn’t have to worry about getting a diploma ……or a date.

P/P/S: Bitter? Who? Who is bitter? Angry? Offended? Me? Nawww…you don’t say.

P/P/S/S: Not afraid of lossing "friend", I see? No not afraid. Some are just not worth keeping. And besides I have a head count to think about.

This is hardcore

Your past life diagnosis:
________________________________________
I don't know how you feel about it, but you were female in your last earthly incarnation. You were born somewhere in the territory of modern Thailand around the year 975. Your profession was that of a jeweler or watch-maker.
________________________________________
Your brief psychological profile in your past life:
Inquisitive, inventive, you liked to get to the very bottom of things and to rummage in books. Talent for drama, natural born actor.
________________________________________
The lesson that your last past life brought to your present incarnation:
There is an invisible connection between the material and the spiritual world. Your lesson is to search, find and use this magical bridge.
________________________________________
Do you remember now?

Took this off Natread's blog.
I don’t believe in reincarnation but hah, trying this was just for fun.

Have developed a not-so healthy hobby. Right now, am suffering an after-effect. It’s 0200hrs and I am feeling restless and ready to parkour. “Are you ready to jump? Are you ready to jump?” asks Madonna continuously.

Ready.

The last pay just came in and it was the most pathetic one ever. It’s not even $300! Since the last week of May was already the school vacation, we had lost 4 days of pay. And the week before that, there was a day for cross country and we weren’t needed…so that added up to 5 days. And on the 16th, I didn’t go to school because my skin was itching badly after a day out dragon-boating with the kids. As I was just a relief teacher with no medical benefits, I lost another day…adding up to 6. That’s basically a week’s pay. Now those pathetic 6 days give me a pathetic paycheck. And there’s the CPF cut….

Seriously
Why did I even do this shit in the first place?
I remember telling myself before that passion can go to hell.
Why didnt I bloody listen?

Since other stash of money is untouchable, guess I have to depend on whatever remains I’ll be having. This sucks. Fortunately, I have the Ishaks trickling in from NPCC duties and an article at the end of the month. Until then, that’s it. No fancy eat-outs and other vices. No shopping, no taking cabs, no clubbing, no unnecessary movies, toiletries and make-up, no purchasing of books and magazines (am suffering from Elle cold turkey already), no ink cartridges, no batteries and no frivolous coffee sessions.

Guess oatmeal will be my new best friend now.
Maybe I can finally lose weight big time.
Hah.

This is too depressing.
I am experiencing such rapid varied emotions right now, it is not funny.

Seriously, all this nonsense has got to end. I am so glad the parents are not kicking me out.

Maybe…not yet.

Damn.

A thousand times goodnight beggars, paupers and artful dodgers.

P/S: Browse my wardrobe, the sis’, brother’s and mother’s wardrobes if the need to shop arises. Pop into the neighbours’ place if desire is too much. Put on headphones and blare loud music should the need to club comes up. Read old books and magazines to combat buying new works. As for the rest…I’ll tackle the demon a day at a time.

P/P/S: I seriously dont recommend the life of a drifter freelancer to the faint-hearted. Think I have enough after one year of living life at a limit.

"Lao Sai!"

Oh it is out!

As objective as I can definitely :)

###

As You Wish...much ado about nothing really

*Burp*
Ah…done with the oatmeal.
Am eyeing the juicy mango next…ooh la la.

Thought yesterday was well spent. Took a walk to the library in the evening and I walked past the sprawling compound of Grandeur 8. Man…will I ever get to stay in such an apartment? With swimming pools and tennis courts and god knows what other facilities? Stood at the gate for quite a while looking up. The guards must have thought that I was a crazy gypsy hippie terrorist wanting to sneak in.

Oh puh-leez.
I am not that crazy.
It’s boho chic, not gypsy..or hippie!
Like..Sienna Miller?

Hahaha who am I kidding

Am more Esmeralda than Sienna!

Geez.

Woke up to a piece of hope and I shall have the weekend to get excited over it. Now there’s a reason to spend my non-existent dough. There’s a reason to stop jogging in my sleep and get out of bed, rather than lounging on it reading Cosmo after Cosmo, watching Pimp My Ride and Sweet 16 re-runs on MTV the whole afternoon away. And oh! [Random alert!] The best way to be fair is to stay out of the sun totally. Vitamin D is not important at all when you have skin cancer.

I love the bimbotic me sometimes.
It’s the by-product of unemployment and absolutely too much free time.

Ah…nothing like Bryan Boy to keep me entertained.

..
..

Awrite gonna go down Robertson Walk with Grace later cause girl friend needs to pick up a cake at CanelĂ©. So atas…why cant she be normal and buy cake from Bengawan Solo, Prima Deli or BreadTalk like everyone else? Hah! It’s so obvious that I haven’t tried the cake. Maybe it’s made from gold.

Me?
If there’s chocolate in there, I’m eating it.

Anyway maybe tonight I’ll meet Clara and we hang out or something. It has been a while since I last met her…or any of the gurlies for that matter. Teacher Wong, though having her holidays, is busy with wedding prep, Cabin Crew Reen as usual is busy globetrotting and mulling over her new house and Conrad Liah is busy dealing with her guests and socialising. The latter sent me an sms a few days ago …reminding me that we haven’t met each other for a while now. Her father suspected that we might no longer be friends. Relax Mr Kamis, I am not about to lose another one. I’ll make sure about this.

Awrite. Shall stop this and continue to lament about life in general.

Life is pain, princess. . . anyone who says differently is selling something
- Westley, The Princess Bride

Scaling the Cliffs of Insanity
Battling Rodents of Unusual Size
Facing torture in the Pit of Despair...
...True love has never been a snap.

Think I shall watch this show tonight…as my bed time activity. Then tomorrow I will make a trip to Sharinah's...Saturday there will be NPCC and gathering with the SF..Sunday I need to get some stuff...Monday I have an appointment...Ah, my life is picking up.

Adieu.

P/S: I love Elliot Yamin’s Wait For You. Wonder if there’s anything or anyone worth waiting for out there.

P/P/S: Watched Anthony Bourdain on his adventure in Ireland last night. I want to go Ireland and eat stew.

Fingers expressing thoughts

Just done installing some programmes and uploading some documents (thank god for back-ups!). Oh, I also managed to send out resumes and watch football at the same time. Who says I cant multi-task? It’s just that …I am not sure if I did anything well.

Finally managed to finish my review for MEN IN WHITE at the library earlier. Will share with you guys once the review is up online. Hope I didn’t sound so harsh. I must remind myself…I am not a critic, but just a normal couch potato. Why should a potato be so harsh? Oh well.

England’s doing well at the moment.
I believe it is because of David Beckham.
You cant deny it.
He has that kind of magic.

Awrite, enough typing for today. The wrist is beginning to feel the strain from too much typing and computer gaming. Writer’s cramp, anyone?

"Writing is a lot like sex. At first you do it because you like it. Then you find yourself doing it for a few close friends and people you like. But if you're any good at all...you end up doing it for money." - Unknown

Sell your soul...or give it away for free

Just surfed Ohgenki.com and realized they had revamped their layout. They have also removed the name of the reviewers and gladly claimed the reviews as their own.

Oh well.

This is what you get when writers sell themselves to the devil. Hard work is no longer theirs and there is absolutely no credit. Things I do to watch free movies. Pooh.

Anyway... to share my bedeviled work, you can check out my reviews of Nada Sou Sou and Legend Of The Sea.

..
..
..
..

But if you don’t have the time or simply cant be bothered, never mind it is okay. Those reviews are really diluted versions of what I really feel. You can always get better reviews here, trust me.

Heh.

Lao bu, kin lai kua

Another disappointing day in the life of Ed.

But on the hand, I managed to clear the clutter on the bed, re-arrange the bra drawer and re-arrange the undies drawer. Managed to do a bit of laundry and best of all, managed to contain the hunger by having breakfast at 1400hrs and eventually light soupy, noodly dinner at 1930hrs. If this continues, I'll die soon of anorexia by end of the year.

Havent been in the sun for quite a while.
Think am getting paler.
Or it can be the whitening moisturiser doing its work. Heh.

Awrite. Am gonna meet Sharinah at AMK Central. Shall pass her her overdued birthday presents. Hope that will cheer her up. We all have been feeling kind of demoralised and beaten lately. It's tough to pick up lost cause sometimes.

But we'll try.
Slowly.

Later.

Wembede wembede wembede, God!

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
(John Lennon, 1970)

“Regarded as one of John Lennon's most caustic and overtly political songs, it explores themes of alienation and social status from childhood to adulthood.” Source

Why wasn’t I born a political activist?
Why wasn’t I born into a million things?

Sometimes I wonder if I have made the wrong decisions somewhere. It doesn’t seem right to be at this position at 27, you know. Sure there are days when I feel great – like hey, it’s 0830hrs. Fuck it. Let’s sleep. But of course there are days that go – Argh it’s 1530hrs and I’ve nothing else to do.

I think it is way too early to give up hope but sometimes the devil gets into you and it will whisper its words of doom. Other days you dismiss it away with a kick in its ass. Other days, you forget about faith and let it get into you. That’s why I believe everyone must have a religion to immerse themselves into. To me, it doesn’t matter if its Buddhism, Hinduism, various forms of Christianity or Judaism, if you have something to hold on to, it gives you faith in times of need.

Many argue as to why they should submit themselves to something they cant see, touch, or heck, man-made. Spirituality works weirdly that way. You have to understand, it is the grasp of faith. It is the belief that although you can control your future, it is up to your Creator to will it. It is common sense that if you believe in the goodness of your Maker, He (this is in general, you feminists) will do you good too. This is not the concept of bribery. This is the feeding of your soul. The very thing that makes up who you are.

Kemana hilang nya keroncong

Anyway.. yeah..wasnt trying to preach but since this is my blog, it serves as a self-reminder. I may have gone way out of line sometimes but I still want to tell myself that Allahu akhbar (God is great) and there is always a place for me under His “wings” (not sure if he has wings so this is definitely metaphorical) no matter how hina I make out myself to be sometimes.

I am only human.
I cant walk this line alone.
And since others are busy walking their own lines, I have to surrender to God.

Some may say it is an act of weakness.
Say what you want.
Lord is my guide.

Awrite.
Enough.

Brought my boys to HTA for the preliminary round of the 0.22 shooting competition.

The results were not very good. I don’t understand why these people had a hard time shooting the god damn huge target boards. Argh! One of them got zero. ZERO, leh!!! I think even my grandmother can shoot at least 1 point.

How come my kids don’t get my shooting genes? Urgh.

Must have more such target boards in my NPCC room and let the kids practise by throwing darts.

Ah, managed to finally upload some blurry pictures taken last Friday.

Here are shots of how Sushila tried to put the garland of flowers around Sai Baba’s neck.

Here are the Tamil Tigers.

Samy’s Curry was nicer than Muthu’s Curry (imho).
And I love the place.
Just that..the staff gave me the heebie jibbies.

Remember the spies, Mama Moonies?

And of course…like every birthday, we have the girl-on-girl shot. This time, the honour goes to Bhavini and Gayatri.

Of course they both had wet sari competition after that
...with lassi down their chest…nandiri.

Ladies ...ladies...ladies...I was only kidding!

Go put your records on ... and buzz off

Want to Get Sorted?
I'm a Gryffindor!

Played computer game during the afternoon…and played till I had a headache. I fell asleep with Snow White on my lap and was gone all the way till 2215hrs. Rushed out to catch Ugly Betty and here I am…all hot and bothered. And frustrated that I wasted my evening by sleeping.

Had to go to HTA tomorrow.
Need to bring some cadets for some shooting competition.
Choa Chu Kang seems so far away.

Okay the headache is really getting worse. I am seeing stars now. Think I shall just go writhe in pain in the comfort of my bed.

A thousand times goodnight, heavy headed OCD-ers.

P/S: Have fun on your trip Nani. Paris, Madrid and Dubai...am so jealous. Magnets, por favor.

P/P/S: Stupid shutterfly is down still. Hang on in there for mama photos.

Dirty dancing Saturday night

Watching Dirty Dancing Havana Night…ah, I want to dance Mambo. No…not Zouk mambo. The real Mambo. And ah… why is Diego Luna so yummy? He and Gael Garcia Bernal. Are all Mexican men so hot? La cucaracha!

Aye caramba!

Was reading Ismail’s blog and he posted this link about which-song-topped-the-chart-on-which-day. Kind of cool…so maybe can be like a copy-pussy and have it here. But dammit Jason. You beat me to it.

How come there are no rock songs????
American chart sucks,

An Indonesian friend has been sms-ing me for the past few days. Not answering will be rude. But aiyah…don’t know what to say also.

Friday was a tiring day. Couldn’t get to sleep and by the time I did, it was 0400hrs and I had to wake up in 3.5 hours’ time.

Braved the stifling mid morning heat and made my way to Katong for the interview. Took a bus which stopped not exactly near. Had to walk for about 10 minutes. Didn’t really get a good vibe and I didn’t think I fitted the bill. What the hell…why did they even call me up in the first place? Anyway East Coast Road/Katong is a really cool place. But ah, travelling will be such a pain in the ass.

Went to town (direct bus) to buy some stuff for Grace and eventually dragged my heavy bag and heels home. Had to refrain from sleeping lest I miss the birthday gathering in the evening. At 1700hrs I made my way to Choa Chu Kang to meet Nani. Followed her to Mustafa Centre as she needed to change money. After that, we still had some time…so we hung out at Andrew’s place before making our way to Dempsey Road’s Samy’s Curry to meet the rest of the fellow “Indian” Moonies.

Grace – Sai Baba
Susan – Kavitha
Nani - Bhavini
Sean – Govinda
Ed - Amendeep
Tini – Gayatri
Joanne - Kajol
Lauren – Sushila
Jason – Shah Rukh
Ismail – Nathan
Sha would have been Anuratha if she had joined

I didn’t have the pictures and besides, shutterfly is having some problems. Will post the pictures soon.

Dinner was soon followed by a “lepak” session at Shiraz (this Persian joint) at The Cannery. After making merry among ourselves and with the belly dancer, we all left for home…before convening at Grace’s place at around 0200hrs (sans Bhavini, Gayatri and Nathan). We had late supper of McDonalds’ delivered to the door step and well, had a hearty time eating again. Shah Rukh sprawled dead on the floor and soon Amendeep and Sushila joined in.

The rest?
Mahjong…what else.

They played till 0600hrs.
I was totally dead.

Oh well.

Planned to go Ubin for the camp but obviously it didn’t materialize. Was supposed to bring in a birthday cake for Cik Zainuri but had to can it. Didn’t go NPCC…and I didn’t even go to my last class. I was that tired.

And I still am.

On the corner of main street
Just tryin’ to keep it in line
You say you wanna move on and
You say I’m falling behind
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

I never really gave up on
Breakin’ out of this two-star town
I got the green light
I got a little fight
I’m gonna turn this thing around
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

The good old days, the honest man;
The restless heart, the Promised Land
A subtle kiss that no one sees;
A broken wrist and a big trapeze
Oh well I don’t mind, you don’t mind
Cause I don’t shine if you don’t shine
Before you go, can you read my mind?

It’s funny how you just break down
Waitin’ on some sign
I pull up to the front of your driveway
With magic soakin’ my spine
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

The teenage queen, the loaded gun;
The drop dead dream, the Chosen One
A southern drawl, a world unseen;
A city wall and a trampoline
Oh well I don’t mind, you don’t mind
Cause I don’t shine if you don’t shine
Before you go
Tell me what you find when you read my mind

Slippin’ in my faith until I fall
You never returned that call
Woman, open the door, don’t let it sting
I wanna breathe that fire again

She said
Oh well I don’t mind, you don’t mind
Cause I don’t shine if you don’t shine

Put your back on me
Put your back on me
Put your back on me

The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds
Cut out of the sun
When you read my mind
(The Killers)

A thousand times goodnights, merry makers and shape shifters.

The Earth is angry

Oh no!
Not another death by a falling tree branch

SINGAPORE: Another death by a broken tree branch – a Vietnamese man in his 20s was killed when he was struck by a fallen branch on Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened at the exit of the Tree Top Walk trail (Petaling Trail) near MacRitchie Reservoir at the Central Catchment Nature Reserve.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. (Source: Channel News Asia)

Go hiking ... struck by tree branch.
Go kayaking...swept away by current.
Eating ... choked on a fishball.

How?

Not about PAP...or is it?

Caught this last night after some confusion about the location of the preview.

MEN IN WHITE is a local production by Kelvin Tong and well, it is better than Legend Of The Sea. But then again hor…watching grass grow is also more exciting than having to sit through Legend Of The Sea.

Anyway MIW stars Liah’s favourite – Shaun Chen – as the lead. There are also Ling Lee (Miss Singapore Universe 2005 runner up), hip-hoppers Ben Yeung and Xavier Teo, familiar TV ah soh Alice Lim and my favourite Singapore Ah Beng Benjamin Heng. There are also cameos by a few local stars but oh well…they are just extras.

The show is about 5 ghosts dealing with their silly problems and quirks after crossing to the other sides. This of course cannot be compared with Tong’s The Maid. MIW reminds me of Jack Neo’s Comedy Night (Gao Xao Xin Dong) because this 88-minute show is just a bag of gags after gags. The plot is of course laughably ridiculous and this show should be categorised with the likes of Dude, Where’s My Car? and the Scary Movie franchise. If you like toilet (literally) humour, bo liao acts and are too young to catch an R21 show, I think you will like this.

MIW does have some memorable parts. I love it when Ben and Xavier (from rap group Street Fusion) break out into Cantonese (or is it Hokkien, Jo?) rap in between scenes. They are fantastic rappers and I think they can fight Machi anytime. I, of course, think Machi is the best Chinese rap group. I also like the part where the new owner is scared shitless by the ghosts.

Hah.

Overall, I give the show a 3/5. If you don’t mind being stupefied, go on. Just don’t bother paying $9.50 for a weekend show. At 88 minutes, watch it after work on a Monday night. Not Friday night or Saturday…but Monday.

Okay. Have an appointment at 1000hrs in Katong. Need to sleep soon. Past couple of days have been DAMN tiring.

Before I shut me eyes, here’s wishing Grace a very very very happy birthday and may you have a great day tomorrow..and the day after…and the day after..and the day after…

That goes to you too.
Happy birthday, Absolut.

A thousand times goodnight, jubilant celebrants.

P/S: I gave the mother my present for her wedding anniversary. Tried to be as casual as possible…hahaha.
