Queer Eye for the Queen

“Sittin' on my own
Chewin' on a bone
A thousand million miles from home
When something hit me
Somewhere right between the eyes

Sleepin' on a plane
You know you can't complain
You took your last chance once again
I landed stranded
Hardly even knew your name” (Talk Tonight, Oasis)

Havent been there lately. Too many things going around. Everything’s whirling, everything’s twirling. Funny how idleness is all that visible. No one has stopped to ask “Are you really okay? Did something snap?” Maybe not yet. Or wait, did I just ignore the question?

I slept at 0500hrs, when the mother woke up to go to work so that I could take her space on the bed. Yup, has been like that since the past few days because I have nowhere to sleep. Queen E takes my bed and I dont want to sleep on the floor because it will be hard for her should she want to wake up to go to the loo or to pray. Besides, I don’t want to be jabbed by her walking stick, which she sometimes uses when the need arises.

Anyway my sleep was cut short cause at 0930hrs, the sister bugged me to wake up to go buy royal food for the royal highness because the humble food in the kitchen was just too low-class and not fit for an imperial meal. The Queen was bugging her but she couldn’t go because she had to go to school. If I had a gun with me, I would have..I would have..shot.. myself.

Put on my ..erm..underclothes, brushed my teeth and went out, still in my trackies. But before I went, the Queen still had the cheek to play mind games with me, just as I was about to buy her breakfast.

Queen: I think no need to go already lah. It is late already. Don’t think there’s anything to eat.

Ed: (almost wanting to choke her myself) It’s only 10.

Queen: What time?
(she is hard of hearing, see)

Ed: 10!!!

Queen: Never mind lah..no need to go down lah..I just lie here and..

Ed: ...I am going to the Central.

Queen: What?

Ed: I am freaking going to the Central!!!!!!!!!

Queen: Ooooh…what’s there at the Central?

[Now this is funny. It is not the first time she is here. Definitely not the first time she asked any of us to buy food. She knows what is at the Central. She knows more than I do. She knows there’s rojak, thosai, prata, nasi this..nasi that. Back to the story.]

Ed: I don’t know.

Queen: The shop across the road…does it still sell prata? Is the shop in front of the polyclinic still selling Nasi Rawon?

Ed: Think so.

Queen: Okay buy for me prata or something. Here’s $2.

Ed: No need. (but I took it anyway) What kind of prata do you want?

[Silence]

Ed: WHAT KIND OF PRATA DO YOU WANT????

Queen: Here’s another $2…get me mixed rice.

Ed: So no more prata?

Queen: You choose rice…gravy..I can eat it for lunch.

Ed: SO NO MORE PRATA?

She went back to bed, lah!

So I went downstairs, went to the bank to do some errands (might as well) and went to the shop to buy rice. Who the fuck buy rice at 1000hrs in the morning? Okay, some people do. But that is not the point. I was stumped. What gravy was fit for a queen? So I chose $5 worth of it…$1 thrown in just because. Then, I bought 80c dao huay for myself, a reward for waking up pre-noon.

Then when I got home, I was thinking of returning Queen E her money. Afterall, her dollars were too royal in my dirty plebeian hands. But she didn’t utter any thanks and instead chided me for choosing expensive sotong (squid) and not buying begedil (potato cutlet) to add to her rice. Waaaaaaaah. Almost wanted to throw my dao huay at her myself.

I don’t mind her sleeping on my bed. I don’t mind her messing up our domestic system. I don’t even mind her leaving banana skin under the bed or in the store room (that drove the father ballistic!). I don’t even mind her dirtying my workspace and not cleaning up after making a mess in the kitchen. I don’t hate her. She just irritates the hell out of me.

But the funny thing was..yesterday I told the mother that both she and the father had been mean to her too. In fact we children, though we got pissed off, we tried to see to her demands. But the mother shirked her way out of contact and the father just got pissed with all his mother’s antics. Then I told her this.

“You guys are mean. But remember, if you guys are going to be like her when you grow old-er, we are going to dump you guys at old folks’ home. Or you can go pitch a tent at some beach.”

I know I am mean. But I think I need to remind the parents that they soon will get to her age..and (oh no) her state.

Oh no. It is almost 1500hrs. Have yet to start on the editing for today. Going to catch Tenacious D: The Pick Of Destiny later.

P/S: If you are wondering why we (the children) dont seem to like to buy food, it is because we had been taught by the father to eat whatever's in the kitchen. He also doesnt like us buying food for the Queen because the Queen has many diseases and that there are many things she cannot eat. But the Queen is greedy. She wants everything. And besides, there are things to eat in the kitchen. Surely you dont need to eat elaborate breakfast right?

P/P/S: On my way back, I was stopped by 2 Indian ladies who thought I was their long-lost friend or something. They said, "Yati? Yati? You are Yati right?" Dey, do I look like a freaking Yati? A yeti, maybe.

Kitchen Musician

Nicked this off Din’s blog.

I was one of the taller girls.

The year was 1989. It was a big year for me. I was appointed class monitor, then a school prefect. I eventually became the head prefect 2 years later. I was given the honour to be the conductor of the musical ensemble, ahead of the seniors, was a freaking star reader (nerdy, I know) and dancer. I was the first in class, 4th in overall standard. My English was good enough for the Gifted stream (but my Maths wasn’t, so I didn’t go). I had a crush on a girl (!) and I wrote her a love letter topped with lyrics from a Gloria Estefan’s song. Hahahahahahahahaa. I put chalk in Shuzhen’s mouth…

Erm ... okay.

Then it all spiralled downwards after that. When I got into the best class the following year, the pressure to keep up was great and so…I left it cold. I was more interested in updating the notice boards with current news, football (well it was Italia 1990!), music training, badminton, Red House athletic practices, reading story books and erm, Malay dance. I wasn’t interested in curriculum subjects other than Social Studies. Thank God I had friends who let me copy their work…day in, day out.

Wow.

No wonder I went to Mayflower Sec years later. No offence to Mayflower, but well, put it this way, it wasn’t really RGS. And if I were to use my prelim marks, I could go there. Don’t ask me how I got 270 for my prelims and way lesser for the real thing. Over-confidence is not something I am proud of.

Ouch.
Touché.

Anyway CY…oh no, bad news.

Babe, I cant attend your hen party (%$^#$!) because I will be away on Pulau Ubin. Dammit. Please tell the strippers I said “hi”. And if your wedding is on January 6 (It is? Fuck!), it seems that I can only be there by 7pm. So sorry. But if you don’t mind me being late a bit, I can still be your emcee. For your record, I always want to be your emcee.

This is terrible. I feel damn bad now lah. I have already given CY my word. And no, I cant escape the course cause I need to put in 100% attendance.

Man...

Oh my sister just got home and guess what? Her boyfriend has just given her an electric guitar, complete with an amplifier…for her 18th birthday.

The guitar from great ol’ Davies’.
I bought my first guits there too, 10 years ago.

The yet-to-be birthday girl with her $200 present.

And here’s the brother and I posing, sharing the pleasure.

The guitar brand (SX) and its picks.
And all I can afford is The Pick Of Destiny, the movie.

Resonating reason

Okay I need to stop editing my scripts. I have just started editing a chapter on pontianak and er...I dont want to edit anymore.

It's 0400hrs and I think I should go to sleep on the mother's bedroom floor.

###

Rock my shit out

Mama we all go to hell
Mama we all go to hell
I'm writing this letter and wishing you well
Mama we all go to hell

Mama we're all gonna die
Mama we're all gonna die
Stop asking me questions
I'd hate to see you cry
Mama we're all gonna die

And when we go don't blame us
We'll let the fires just bathe us
You made us oh so famous
We'll never let you go
And when you go don't return to me my love

Mama we're all full of lies
Mama we're meant for the flies
And right now they're building a coffin your size
Mama we're all full of lies

Well mother

What the war did to my legs and to my tongue
You should have raised a baby girl
I should have been a better son
If you could coddle the infection
They can amputate at once
You should have been
I could have been a better son

And when we go don't blame us
We'll let the fires just bathe us
You made us oh so famous
We'll never let you go
She said 'You ain't no son of mine'
For what you done they're gonna find
A place for you and just you mind
Your manners when you go
And when you go don't return to me my love

Mama we all go to hell
Mama we all go to hell
It's really quite pleasant
Except for the smell
Mama we all go to hell

2 - 3 - 4
Mama!
Mama!
Mama!

And if you would call me your sweetheart
I'd maybe then sing you a song

But there's shit that I've done
With this fuck of a gun
You would cry out your eyes all along
We're damned after all
Through fortune and flame we fall
And if you can say then

I'll show you the way to return from the ashes you call

We all carry on
When our brothers in arms are gone
So raise your glass high
For tomorrow we die
And return from the ashes you call
- My Chemical Romance, Mama

I think they have gone bonkers with this.

But I like.

A thousand times goodnight, Black Parade participants.

Shedding light about God's angels

I just want to say that I am not jaded. In fact, I am not fit to be jaded. Not fit, yes.

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now here he comes

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined

When you were young

Can we climb this mountain ...I don't know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let's take it easy
Easy now, watch it go

We're burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes
And see the place where you used to live
When you were young

They say the devil's water it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

I said he doesn't look a thing like Jesus
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But more than you'll ever know
- When You Were Young, The Killers

Girls grow up believing that one day, they will be swept off their feet by a beautiful man. How many had their dreams come true? Yet, how many haven't regretted?

....

Am just waiting for the brother and his friend to be done with the laptop so that I can do my work. It’s past midnight already and I predict it is going to be another all-nighter. Might as well. The Queen E is here and I have nowhere to sleep anyway.

As I was mindlessly surfing the net, a question posed by the religious lecturer came to mind:
If Allah is all-powerful, why does He need angels to carry out his commands?

Hmm…Have you got any idea?

“The Qur’an also speaks of angels as playing a crucial role in processes like creation, prophecy, spiritual life, death, resurrection, and the workings of natural elements. For instance, there is an angel who brings the thunder, and he, too, serves God and obeys His command. Other angels are in charge of embryos in wombs, or responsible for protecting human beings.

The Qur’an speaks of the charge of the angel of death in these verses:
[The angel of death, who has been charged with you, will gather you; then to your Lord you will be returned.]
(As-Sajdah 32:11)

The Qur’an also mentions angels in connection with Heaven and Hell:
[Gardens of Eden which they shall enter ... and the angels shall enter unto them from every gate.]
(Ar-Ra`d 13:23)

Also angels record the deeds of humans as long as they are on earth:
[There are over you watchers, noble writers, who know whatever you do.] (Al-Infitar 82:10-12)

[Over every soul there is a watcher.] (At-Tariq 86:4)

Angels are also mentioned in many hadiths. For example, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have said that when people gather together in remembrance of God, “The angels surround them, mercy covers them, peace descends on them, and God remembers them among those who are with Him”
(At-Tirmidhi).

Angels are different from human beings in that they do not have a will of their own. They were created for the specific purpose of serving God and carrying out His commands. Some angels are in a state of constant worship of God, prostrating to Him and never raising their heads.”

[Angels in Islam: Creatures of Light By Prof. Shahul Hameed]

Mucho grazias!

I disagree with the notion that angels are God’s helpers. God, being God, is all-powerful and thus He doesn’t need help. I don’t buy the suggestion that the Earth is too big for Him to govern because remember, He is the creator of all universe and not just Earth.

So what do I buy?

My proposed answer (pardon the lack of research and shallow knowledge) is that God loves humans so much that He gives them angels to remind them of His divinity. He bestows us angels so that we can be reminded of Heaven and Hell and Judgement Day. He makes us aware of the presence of angels so that we can acknowledge His greatness. Knowing that we have Munkar and Nakir (God’s angels) questioning us about our faith in God when we die make us prepare ourselves and accumulate good deeds so as to be in favour of God.

That’s my answer.
If only I have the balls to answer my lecturer in class.

Anyway more to angels.

No one knows if angels have wings or are halo-ed. Men visualised them to be that way, to romanticise them. Many of us aspire to be angels but in truth, we are better than angels. God create both us and angels but He didn’t give them the power to have their own free will. They are just loyal servants of God. To put it in a rougher term, your average Sunday Maria has more freedom than the angels that people normally idolised.

There is no such thing as a fallen angel because angels are not programmed that way. They are made to obey. Before we assume that they are perfect, just remember they have no free-will, the ability to think and the ability to learn. We, humans, are capable of that. That, in the eyes of God, makes us better than angels. He allows us to learn, decide/choose, make mistakes, repent and be an even better person.

Therefore do not aspire to be an angel.
Aspire to be the best that you can be.

Wah wah wah.

I am just glad I find my answer to the lecturer’s question. Now I can start my work.

Bestowed upon thee my celestial visit

I slept close to 0900hrs and 3 hours later, Queen E came to visit. Perfecto, mucho perfecto.

Had a quite productive dawn. Managed to edit till page 18. Good progress, okay.

Made my way to town yesterday. Meiling passed me a couple of movie tickets so…

The Last Kiss, starring Zach Braff (I love him), Casey Affleck, Tom Wilkinson, Blythe Danner, Jacinda Barret, Rachel Bilson…

Where do I start?

THE LAST KISS is a show about friendship and degenerating relationships. The context may seem simple but well, it painfully works because almost everyone can relate to it. It is about a group of 30 year-olds struggle to adapt to adulthood while their aging parents face middle age and death. It is damn sad, awrite. It questions you ..so what if you know that person for 3 years or 30 years? When shit happens, it happens and no amount of assurance can prevent it from happening.

"What you feel only matters to you. It's what you do to the people you love. That's what matters. That's the only thing that counts."

Very true.

Coming from Crash director, The Last Kiss does seem a lot like Crash – intertwining lives and painful social relations. Don’t watch it when you have just been dumped, being cheated on or turning 30 soon. The movie is not bad…but it is not great either. But then again, great movies are subjective anyway.

Yes. I was so upset. The movie was sad and depressing and I was crying in the later half of the show.

Anyway as we walked down, we saw many akan-datang movie posters. Of course an upcoming Chinese one caught my eye. Rather, this person caught my eye.

Jay Chou…The Curse Of The Golden Flower

Oh well. As Sharinah and I walked further, I suddenly saw something which immediately took my mind off Jay Chou.

Victoria’s Secret! Oh man!
There goes exclusivity.
Dammit.
And don’t get me started on the price.
It’s ridiculous!

Queen E is sitting in front of me right now. Feel trapped now. Where can I go?

Think I shall spend the whole day outside tomorrow.

Oh oh Justin Timberlake is on Ellen. Got to go..JUSTIN baybeeeeee!

Phua Wedding Nov 25 '06

Am blogging on borrowed time..and also in total darkness. I hate it when I don’t have a proper office or work area in the house. You are subjected to circumstances. Nabei.

Let’s recap what happened on Saturday, November 25 2006.

(Began to play a list of songs Ed had picked for Susan to be played on the hen night. However the organiser “killed” Ed’s plan by saying that Mr D had a huge collection of songs and we could just play them for the night. Yeah…we had Barbara Streisand.)

The solemnisation was held at The Regent’s bar. Nani, Ismail, Mr D and I were a tad late because we didn’t know where to park. Sha came very late because she thought the ceremony was at ROM Fort Canning and she was there instead. Grace couldn’t make it for the ceremony. Think she had something on earlier in the day. Maybe, she had no shoes to go with her dress or something.

The event.

The ceremony.

The Bride and Groom looked so youthful…it was like seeing 2 teenagers kissing. It was almost illegal.

Anyway…
The food was good.
The desserts, greater.
The company, the best.

Tired of the couch, we moved on to the piano.

Soon it was time to leave the bar. We were the last few to leave. If not for the fact that the couple had to rest, we would have probably rested there till evening. So Sha and I followed Nani and her boyfriend to his place in Newton. There, we girls just hung out, updated one another about the going-ons in our lives. There were coffee, pillows and gay TV presenter on telly. I also had the privilege of watching Sha change.

The rain made it all the more comfortable to stay in. However, it was time to doll ourselves up and got ready. Soon we were all bundled in Nani’s car…off to Regent Hotel once again...

…only to realise that we were very early. We were cam-whoring when Tan, my Malaysian friend came to join us.

After an endless wait, the rest of the gang finally arrived. But first, let’s perv on the beautiful bridal gown. And the bride too, of course.

Okay.
Enough.
Here’s the next important thing for the night.
Hah, the grub. Some were gone before Ismail could take a shot of them.

Obviously our priorities were screwed up. Haha.
Let’s re-introduce Bride and Groom once again…Susan and Sean Phua.

Told you we all looked like kids having their prom night.

Okay.
Got carried away.
Here are the Bride and Groom again.

Soon, it all ended…with Ting having a stomachache.

Okay, she hadn’t.
But the night did end with a bang…at a sleazy karaoke pub.
Notice that I was no longer blind?

Ting did an impersonation of Gloria Gaynor on speed, singing I Will Survive. Totally killed me, as I was seen clutching my sides and gasping for oxygen.

So with a little of a girl-on-girl action,

...the night was officially over at 0400hrs on Sunday November 26. We had a blast…all thanks to Sean Phua and Susan Chee-Phua. Okay, I cant help that last bit.

Now it is 0610hrs on Tuesday morning.
It’s time to sleep before the sun rises and kills me.

A thousand times goodnight, bats and cavemen.

P/S: The next Moonie wedding will be in Dec 2007..Jason+Joanne's..unless one of us decides to just get married spontaneously. Hmmm, that sounds interesting. Who? Who?

P/P/S: We girls have offered our services to become Jay's brothers. Ting can drink and eat, Lauren and Grace can sing, Ed can compose love poems, Sha can dance and Nani and Susan can haggle, argue and bargain. Perfection. Who says "brothers" must be men? Err.. Ho hum...
Ismail and Sean can be with Jo inside the house...and take revenge. Ismail will redeem those times the girls bully and insult him. Sean...can redeem the time when he was made to do stupid stuff in order to conquer Susan on his wedding day.
